Whitepaper Launch: A Citizens’ Track on AI: Alignment, agency and accountability
We are delighted to be sharing the citizens’ track whitepaper, setting out why and how participatory practice can address the democratic deficit in AI governance, and bring greater alignment with the public interest, agency for communities and accountability of action. The paper sets out the action needed to move from listening to public voices, to connecting with people through community assemblies across the world, and to ultimately embedding inclusive public participation in the evolving AI governance architecture.

There’s still time to register to join us remotely for the launch of the paper in a fringe event of the UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance at 09:00 CEST on Tuesday morning.
Launching the PAVE Case Book
The whitepaper builds on a strong foundation: evidence from over 80 projects across the world that have explored participatory approaches to AI development, governance and resistance. Thanks to amazing efforts from everyone who has been submitting case studies and a fantastic research team, we are really pleased to be launching the casebook website today.
You can browse profiles of individual cases or explore examples of participatory AI on the interactive map.
We will be showcasing the casebook at the AI for Good Expo with an interactive screen showing videos from different projects, as well as messages from public participants drawn from project reports.

Taking the citizens’ track forward
This week in Geneva sees a milestone for the citizens track initiative. But this is just the beginning. On Wednesday as part of the multi-stakeholder day organised in partnership with OHCHR B-Tech Project & BSR, Global Network Initiative, MAP-AI, PAIRS, the Geneva Graduate Institute, and the Global South Network for Trustworthy AI we will be hosting an interactive workshop at the United Nations Geneva headquarters to explore the partnerships, processes and actions needed to take the track forward.

People in the lead
I want to give the final word in this short citizens’ track update to the 11 members of the People’s Panel on AI, whose recommendations after spending a week learning alongside the 2023 AI Safety Summit, set us at Connected by Data on a path to explore how global participation on AI could be realised in ways that are both inclusive and impactful.
They called for global governance of AI “…to bring together citizens, impartial experts and government from across the world, and ensure regulatory collaboration that includes the global south.”
